PDX Blogger Book Club: Fitness Confidential

Fitness Confidential

This post & “Fitness Confidential” book club event are part of a compensated campaign that I was hired to organize; Amazon Associates links have been used in this article. Bloggers were provided with a complimentary ebook and Starbucks gift card as a thank you for participating. Always consult with your doctor before beginning a weight loss or exercise regime; this article is not intended as health advice or to diagnose, treat or prevent any condition.

I really enjoy getting the chance to meet up with local bloggers, which is partially why I’ve logged so much travel time this summer. So when Word of Mouth Women asked me if I’d like to organize a book club event for area bloggers, I was really excited. The book club was being coordinated to discuss “Fitness Confidential”, written by celebrity trainer Vinnie Tortorich with “Arrested Development” writer Dean Lorey. One part memoir and one part healthy living manual, this book is a humorous, fun read that touts a more common-sense approach to weight loss and exercise over gimmicks and fads. I was eager to see what my colleagues would have to say about this, especially since I met so many great people at FitBloggin’ in June.

Pioneer Courthouse Square

Usually, I would host an event like this at my house, but since I’m the only blogger in Seaside, I knew that wouldn’t work for this type of gathering since everyone else is either in or close to Portland. As I mulled over where to hold the event, I quickly decided on Pioneer Courthouse Square. This brick courtyard in downtown Portland has tons of places to sit, free Wi-Fi, and a Starbucks – where better to hold a book club than a coffee shop?

PDX Book Club Bloggers

On Friday night, a great group of local bloggers came out to hang out, chat, and share their thoughts after reading “Fitness Confidential”. Pictured from left to right are Jennifer from The Quirky Momma, Jodi from The Mama Gut, Evelyn from Momsicle, myself, Mary Ann from A Cloth Life, and Krista of Mostly Mommyhood. We were also joined by my fiance and blogging tech guru Jai, who conveniently offered to hold the camera so he could get out of being in the picture. 😉

Book Club Bloggers!

After we all got a cup of coffee and sat down, we began our discussion of “Fitness Confidential”. I was looking forward to hearing everyone’s honest opinions – I figured that if a few people really hated the book, we’d have some lively conversation fodder! But that didn’t end up happening, because our group unanimously enjoyed the book, even those who were expecting to dislike it. A couple of bloggers said that they had been dreading reading it because they thought it would be dull, and were surprised to find that they couldn’t put it down after they started. Lest you think me disingenuous, I’d like to mention that I lead the discussion with several critiques of my own, because I wanted the bloggers to feel comfortable sharing anything they didn’t like about the book.

All of us enjoyed the storytelling in this book and the no-nonsense way in which Tortorich conveys his diet and fitness advice. His philosophy on health is simple and does not involve any elaborate systems or steps: For losing weight, he believes that a no-sugar, no-grain diet is they key, and he also maintains that diet is more important that exercise for getting and keeping weight off. This brought up some really interesting discussion on how this approach could work for us – some of the bloggers had already taken steps by ordering their coffees without sugar, or making bacon for breakfast! What a lot of us appreciated about the book was the fact that he doesn’t tell you to eliminate sugar and grains 100% of the time, since deprivation can really sabotage healthy eating; instead, he advises that you simply avoid grains and sugar most of the time, even if you have cake on your birthday.

This brought up the interesting point of how much work can be involved in eating this way, since so much food contains sugar even when you don’t expect it. Obviously, making all your food from scratch is the ideal way to go, but our group pointed out the challenges that poses when you have several children as well as a full-time job. A working mom who pulls shifts at two jobs before picking her kids up at daycare faces different challenges than a celebrity – so we may have to adapt some of these strategies in order for them to be realistic for our own schedules. I’m sure personal trainers are sick to death of the excuses they hear from their clients, but I think it’s important to remember that some people have very good reasons why their health is on the back burner, so it’s important to look at their life as a whole when addressing potential solutions rather than dismissing everyone as just being lazy. If Tortorich comes out with a book on healthy living for families, I think it’d be a huge hit with our group, and I’m sure he could put together a great one since he’s actually trained children!

The bloggers really enjoyed how Fitness Confidential utilizes funny anecdotes and life experiences to entertain and inspire. The book is full of one-liners which the author refers to as “Vinnie-isms”, with stories ranging from hilarious and surreal moments training his Hollywood clientele to his own triumphs against unimaginable adversity. His style is very opinionated and blunt – our group didn’t seem to really be offended by the language used in the book, although they said they could have gone without some of the more explicit anecdotes about his conquests. In fact, the dismissive jokes about women in the first half of the book seemed to be the only thing that really got our eyes rolling when reading the book.

Discussing the book

As the sun set over Pioneer Square, we wrapped up our book club and said our goodbyes. It was a great evening of thought-provoking discussion – I had such a wonderful time connecting with these great women. I’ll be sharing their reviews on the book with you as they post them, but in the meantime, I will leave you with mine and Jai’s take on Fitness Confidential.

Beeb’s Review:

Beeb reviews Fitness Confidential

I read this book in the car last week during our trip to Orcas Island. Fitness Confidential is a fast, light read – in fact, it took me almost as long to get the Kindle app working as it did for me to read the book! Tortorich and Lorey have created a book that is engaging, compelling, and funny. I loved reading his personal story and was glad that he made this book fun and humorous, because I’m so bored of traditional health books; I was reluctant to put Fitness Confidential down because I was absorbed in the story.

Tortorich’s skewering of the diet/fitness industry is entertaining, and while I don’t agree with him on everything, I think his overall approach makes a lot of sense. When I got to the portion of the book about “No sugar, no grains”, I thought, “Well, I’m out!”. 😉 However, everything he says makes sense and the fact that he encourages his clients to still indulge occasionally makes it much more practical for real-world success. I certainly can’t argue that reducing my intake of sugar and bread helps me, because as a matter of fact, I try to avoid keeping those things in the house specifically because I know I will want to snack endlessly on them.

Jai’s Review:

Jai reviews Fitness Confidential

“This book covers a lot of ground in its 240 pages and, no matter your interests, there’s a little bit of something for everyone. Gym rats, weekend joggers, Ultra-racers, and people who just want to lose a few pounds will find something good to walk away with. Vinnie Tortorich has decades of real-world experience as a personal trainer and has seen fad diets come and go. He has a way of distilling a lot of complicated concepts into something that can be adapted into lifestyle changes that work. I can think of two major concepts that I’ll be taking from this book and integrating into my life. The first is the general approach to food. Notice that I didn’t use the word diet in that sentence. The other is the advice on which exercises are most important for weight lifting, and guidelines on the best way to increase the weights as you progress. I’m glad I got a chance to read this book!”

Fitness Confidential is available on Amazon for $9.99. For more information and to listen to the author’s free podcast, visit VinnieTortorich.com.

PDX Summer Concerts: Sunset at The Zoo

Your Zoo and All That Jazz

Complimentary zoo admission & train ride received.

Last night, Jai and I headed into Portland for Sunset at The Zoo, the Oregon Zoo’s annual evening concert & family fun series. We had a great time at last year’s Sunset at the Zoo and were looking forward to this summer’s entertainment. During this event, the Zoo stays open late so that guests can observe crepuscular animals and listen to live music. There are fun activities provided for kids such as storytime with princesses and crafts, while parents can enjoy beer and wine in a fun family environment.

The fun starts at 5 PM and runs through 9:30, so we hit the road that afternoon and planned to meet my brother-in-law there. There were some pretty slow cars on Highway 26 that were doing 10 miles under the speed limit in a no-passing zone, so we ended up hitting Portland right at rush hour. It took us an hour to go 8 miles, so we ended up not arriving at the zoo until 6 PM – we must have gotten lucky in the past, because I’ve driven through rush hour traffic in PDX at this time before and never encountered standstill traffic quite like that! By the time we finally got there, Jai’s brother had already left because he had to get back to work. 🙁 The traffic was terrific and there was some confusion on parking, but once we got settled in we were ready for some good fun!

We stopped by a bench so that I could grab a few meal bars that I had packed in my bag as snacks, and the “Mayor of Hooperville” was nearby giving kids a hula hoop lesson. One of the hula hoopers walked up to us while we ate and said, “Would you guys like a hula hoop lesson?”

Beeb gets a hula hooping lesson

I’ve tried hula hooping maybe once in my life, so the girls gave me a crash course on hooping. I learned that you move your stomach forwards and backwards rather that trying to move in a circle as I had mistakenly assumed. I kept the hoop up for maybe 10 seconds at the most, but it was a world record for me! Let me tell you, that is one awesome ab workout – I’m thinking I need to pick up a hula hoop for exercise now!

All That Jazz!

After I learned the ropes (Hoops?) of hula hooping, we made our way down to the concert lawn to watch “Your Zoo and All That Jazz”. This fantastic lineup included Oregon Music Hall of Fame’s Shirley Nanette and Mel Brown, jazz drummer who has performed on recordings for everyone from Motown artists like Marvin Gaye to George Harrison; Grammy-winner Thara Memory and accomplished pianist Tom Grant, not to mention local jazz greats Sweet Baby James Benton, Renato Caranto, Dave Captein and Ron Steen.

It was a beautiful day and perfect setting to listen to some fantastic musicians. The lawn area is set up so that families can relax and children can dance while enjoying the music – it’s a really fun atmosphere!

Zoo Train

After listening to a few songs, we headed over to the Zoo Train to catch a ride on the last train of the day.

Zooliner

The “Zooliner” takes you on a 25-minute tour through the zoo grounds and Washington Park. Zoo animals are not visible from the train – rather, it is a peaceful, scenic tour through the natural beauty of the area. It’s a great way to rest after you’ve been on your feet for a while, and with the sun just starting to go down, it was a lovely time of day to ride the train.

Beeb & The Zooliner

Beeb and Jai riding the Zoo Train

And of course, we saw plenty of animals during our evening at the zoo!

Mandrill

Sleepy Amur leopard

Can you spot the sleepy cat? This is an Amur leopard – there are only about 22 left in the wild with 200 existing in zoos, so this is a very precious endangered animal.

My height in comparison to a bear!

I also found out how tall I am compared with a bear!

Penguin cutout display

We also got to see a few animals that we missed the last time we were at the zoo – the penguins and otters. The otter we saw was right in front of the glass, relaxing and taking a nap. We got such a good view – otters are adorable – and bigger than we expected! We also got a good look at a few penguins diving, swimming and hanging out on the rocks. SO cute!

Emperor Penguin & eagle skeletons

These are the skeletons of an Emperor Penguin and an eagle. There seem to be a lot of bird bones on my blog lately, don’t there? What can I say, I think it’s interesting. 😉

Sunset at The Zoo is a great activity for all ages – there’s so much to see at the Oregon Zoo to begin with, and these evening activities just add even more options to choose from.

Hours & Admission

Sunset at The Zoo will take place on July 24th, August 7th and August 21st from 5 PM to 8 PM; grounds stay open until 9:30 PM – check out the Oregon Zoo calendar for details on the upcoming activities and concerts.

Concert is included with regular zoo admission price, which is $11.50 for adults, $10 for seniors and $8.50 for children aged 3 to 11, with children under 2 getting in free. Click here for more information on discounts, parking & membership. Zoo Train fare is $5.

Visit the Oregon Zoo on the web, Facebook or Twitter for further details!

Happy 4th of July!

Vintage flag dress

Happy Independence Day! Do you like my outfit? This is a vintage ’60s dress that Grandma gave me. I wear it every 4th of July!

Fireworks

Every year, Seaside hosts a large fireworks show on the beach. We have a great view of the show from Grandma’s house, so we headed up there this evening to watch the display – these are a few photos that we snapped.

Ooooh

Aaaahhhh

The Lone Ranger Movie Review

The Lone Ranger
We received complimentary admission to an advance screening of this film for the purposes of review.

Last week, my sister-and-law and I headed to Regal Cinemas Bridgeport Village Stadium 18 & IMAX in Tigard to catch an advance screening of The Lone Ranger. An over-the-top homage to spaghetti westerns, this film is an action-packed romp with a sense of humor. The story follows John Reid (Armie Hammer), a naive, rule-following lawyer and future Lone Ranger who finds an unexpected ally in Comanche tribesman Tonto (Johnny Depp). The film kicks right into gear by starting off with a long action sequence, which was great – many films like this really drag at the beginning so I like the fact that they got right down to the action.

There has been a lot of publicity and controversy around some portions of this film, which I can’t properly address without spoiling some parts of the movie, so I’ve put the bulk of my review under a cut. Click the blurred text below to view my full review, which does include spoiler details about the plot:

There has been a lot of discussion concerning the portrayal of Native Americans in this movie, with many voicing concerns about the stereotypes being reinforced and the lack of roles in film for non-caucasian actors. Others, such as the film’s Comanche adviser, William “Two-Raven” Voelker, have defended the film’s approach. Depp, who has stated that he believes he has Cherokee or Creek ancestry, was formally adopted by the Comanche tribe after the president of Americans for Indian Opportunity, LaDonna Harris, heard of the film and extended the invitation.
I don’t blame anyone for feeling either way about this movie, honestly. Depp is not a member of a tribe outside of his Comanche adoption after the film – I think getting into the argument of who is truly “Native American enough” is a real problem in and of itself, but there’s no arguing that most roles in any Hollywood movie go almost unanimously to caucasian-identified actors and that’s a huge issue. I love Johnny Depp, but it’s too bad that roles like these don’t go to actors who are tribe members.
That being said, this film is more like watching Johnny Depp as Hunter Thompson working at the Pirates of the Caribbean ride than Tonto. It felt a little like a purposeful parody of Tonto, and when I read some interviews with Depp after watching the film is seems that is exactly what he was going for. I’ve always liked Depp and his often-eccentric acting style, so I was expecting the movie to be entertaining in that way; as a standalone Johnny Depp character, his Looney-Toons portrayal was really funny and the best part of the movie – the baggage with the cultural implications is the thing that gave me pause, such as the broken English accent.
My overall feeling was that there was a lot of stereotyping and silliness with the outward appearance and mannerisms of all the characters, while their actual personalities and the overall plot are trying to be more progressive. Tonto isn’t a sidekick or idiot as many have feared he would be portrayed – in fact, he’s the only one in the movie who seems to have a brain sometimes – and one of the portions that some have had problems with, the portrayal of spiritual beliefs in a dismissive “New Age” way, are not what they seem. Tonto tells many fantastic tales of visions and spiritwalkers through the movie, which the Lone Ranger dismissed as “Crazy” Comanche beliefs. When they come across a Comanche tribe, the Lone Ranger is stunned when they tell him: “We don’t believe any of that – Tonto is crazy, that’s why he says that!” It’s kind of an interesting twist – the Lone Ranger had just assumed that Tonto’s “Eccentricities” were due to being Comanche, and is stunned to meet the rest of the tribe and find that none of them look or act like Tonto does. The tribe think that both Tonto and the Lone Ranger are nuts and end up burying them both in sand so they’ll stay out of their way!
The film also tries to focus on the very real plight of native peoples more than your typical shoot-em-up western. The centerpiece to the movie is a group of robbers who frame the Comanche people so that they can take their land to steal silver and build a railroad. The Lone Ranger is a true believer in justice and fairness, and is convinced he can sort this big misunderstanding out – only to be devastated to learn that the business interests and local military are only concerned with greed. After a horrific battle where Comanche are slaughtered in droves, the formerly-pacifist Lone Ranger decides to just blow up the train and wipe out the bad guys. The fact that it had a sort-of happy ending is probably one of the least believable parts of the whole thing, but I appreciated the effort they made to really cause the audience to feel grief when we see Tonto’s family murdered and watch the utter injustice that the Comanche are subjected to. It’s a small thing, but people can connect emotionally with films and it does not hurt to remind moviegoers about the cruel parts of history, even if it’s sandwiched in a ridiculous action film.

The action and Johhny Depp are completely absurd, and I mean that in a good way – it’s a silly romp and tongue-in-cheek tribute to old westerns, so it’s supposed to be funny and ridiculous. They push the envelope with the action – absolutely none of it is realistic and that’s why it’s fun. There is a second action sequence on trains towards the end of the movie, complete with the William Tell Overture playing in the background, and it sort of reminded me of an old west take on the freeway scene in Matrix Reloaded – the characters do the most impossible stunts jumping on top of trains, trees, blowing up boxcars, and standing in front of windows full of gunfire without getting shot. It’s absolutely insane and that’s why it’s so fun to watch! Other movie highlights include Helena Bonham Carter, who plays a brothel madam with an ivory leg containing a gun. She is awesome and I have to say, I was shocked to see her and Depp together in a film that wasn’t directed by Tim Burton. 😉

I thought the film kept up a good pace, although it dragged a bit in the middle. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, all modern movies are way too long! Honestly, I thought the parts of the movie where they focused on the mechanics of the plot and how X bad guy cooked up Y scenario made my eyes glaze slightly – I guess I don’t like to be challenged during action movies. 😉 I think it’s because action films will usually tend to have pseudo-complex plots that are hard to follow and don’t really make enough sense to be challenging or interesting. Overall the plot of The Lone Ranger worked pretty well and tried to keep the twists coming, but some of the details of it failed to draw me in, possibly just due to the length of the film.

My sister-in-law and I really enjoyed ourselves – I’ll be honest, I was expecting that it could be pretty boring, but it kept my attention and I loved all the fun and action. We had a fab night at the movies and I know that we’ll be seeing the sequel, because folks, they purposely left the ending waaay open for a sequel!

The Lone Ranger is in theaters today, July 3rd – just in time for the long holiday weekend!

See’s Candies Grand Re-Opening in Eugene

See's Candies

We were provided with complimentary candy and goodies during this event. Yum! This post also contains affiliate links.

Last Thursday, I was invited to attend an event at See’s Candies in Eugene to celebrate their re-opening. The store had been located in the Valley River Center for almost 40 years, and made the move last Monday to their new location at Lindsey Crossing. To get the word out, media that cover the region were invited to come and check out the location and taste some of the new offerings. The timing on everything worked out perfectly for us, since we were traveling all over the place for events last week; not to mention, I have a dear friend that lives near Eugene and was able to grab lunch with her and catch up before the event.

The location at Lindsey Crossing is very accessible and easy to find, which is why the store wanted to move there – Jai and I had never driven to this shopping area before and it was effortless getting there. Once we arrived, the staff welcomed us in and invited us to try any of the candies that caught our eye. Talk about being a kid in a candy store!

White Mint Truffle

When they asked me what I’d like to try, I knew I had to taste the White Mint Truffle. I’m a little obsessed with peppermint and I love white chocolate, so it looked like something that was right up my alley!

Closeup of the White Mint Truffle

If you love mint like I do…I don’t think you’ll be disappointed in this one. YUM!

Beeb at See's Candies

We sampled so many delicious candies at this event.

Milk Bordeaux

This is the Milk Bordeaux, one of their most popular offerings.

Jai eating Maple Cashew Brittle

I snapped this photo at the exact moment that Jai bit into a piece of Maple Cashew Brittle. The look you see on his face was him saying Mmmmmm because it was even tastier than he expected!

Candy contest

During the event, they had a fun contest where we all split into teams of two and competed to see who could pack a box of candy the fastest. Jai and I got a crash course from the pros on how to hold the candy cups for maximum efficiency – it’s a little like dealing cards!

Jai & Beeb after the candy packing contest

Special thanks to Cariann for offering to hold my camera and take these photos of us!

Jai and I finished our boxes at almost the same time, but his box looked better than mine so he was the winner this time. 😉 We got to keep the boxes that we packed, and were both given a copy of See’s Famous Old Time Candies: A Sweet Story by Margaret Moos Pick as a prize. We learned all kinds of fun history and trivia about the company – for example, did you know that the famous candy conveyor belt episode of I Love Lucy was filmed at See’s Candies? When I was participating in the candy contest, I told them that I resisted the temptation to shove it all in my mouth instead of the box the way Lucy did. 😉

At the end of event, we were all given a fun See’s tote bag packed with goodies to take home. It was perfect timing, since we spent the week staying with Jai’s brother and sister-in-law in Portland – really, what makes a sweeter hostess gift than a box of candy?
